How should I deal with anxiety?
Noor
Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim. Dear seeker, know that anxiety is something even the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) experienced. In Surah Ash-Sharh (94:5-6), Allah reminds us: "Verily, with hardship comes ease. Verily, with hardship comes ease." The repetition is intentional — Allah emphasizes this twice! Imam Al-Ghazali, in his Ihya Ulum al-Din, teaches that anxiety often comes from placing too much trust in our own plans rather than in Allah's plan. The Quran calls us to tawakkul — active trust in God while still taking action.
You
What practical steps does Islam suggest?
Noor
The Prophetic tradition gives us beautiful practices. First, regular salah (prayer) — Surah Al-Ankabut (29:45) tells us prayer "prevents immorality and wrongdoing" — it anchors the soul. Second, dhikr — the remembrance of Allah. The Prophet said, "Truly in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest" (Quran 13:28). Third, du'a — personal supplication. Pour your heart out to Allah in your own words, in any language. And fourth, seek good company — the Prophet compared a good companion to a perfume seller; even if you don't buy, you'll carry the fragrance. These are not just spiritual recommendations — modern psychology confirms that prayer, meditation, personal expression, and community are among the most effective tools for managing anxiety.
